The 2018 Winter Olympics Games: An Opportunity for Learning

Since #PitchThisEDU is all about sharing opportunities for teachers and students, we can't ignore the impending learning opportunity that is the modern Olympic games! With the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea quickly approaching (Friday, February 9th), here are some great resources for you to harness the power of the Olympics to engage students; while also staying true to your curriculum and standards!

  1. Teachers - are you wondering if you can use the 2018 Winter Olympics PyeongChang emblem on your educational blog? Your answer is here, with more information highlighted at the bottom of this page (hint: the short answer is yes - for non-commercial/educational/editorial purposes).

  3. As always, Larry Ferlazzo's Websites of the Day has come through with some outstanding resources for K12 educators with "The Beginning List for Learning about PyeongChang Winter Olympics" and "New Teaching & Learning Resources About The PyeongChang Winter Olympics." Seriously...these links host an amazing collection of resources.
  4. ​Build excitement in your classroom this week with an opening ceremonies clip, like this one - Olympic Opening Ceremonies, A Journey Through Time. And, for elementary classrooms, try the PyeongChang 2018 Mascot Animation with more information about the Mascot here! 
  5. Heather Singmaster's Education Week Global Learning blog outlines ideas for incorporating diversity education using the Olympics as a springboard.
  6. Need more?! We Are Teachers has given us, "8 Ways to Celebrate the Winter Games in Your Classroom" and the National Science Foundation has some great ideas about the Science of the Winter Olympics.
  7. Finally - find inspiration regarding the Olympics with TED-Ed, Big Think, Great Big Story, and National Geographic Education.
